China Director on National Security Council, 2021-23
Jonathan A. Czin is a distinguished China expert who served as the Director for China at the U.S. National Security Council from 2021 to 2023, where he coordinated White House and inter-agency diplomacy, including all President Biden’s engagements with President Xi Jinping. A former senior analyst at the CIA, Czin played a central role in analyzing Chinese politics and policymaking, briefing top U.S. policymakers on critical issues and crises involving China. He holds a master’s degree in international relations from Yale University, graduated magna cum laude from Haverford College, studied at Oxford University, and is proficient in Mandarin Chinese; he currently holds the Michael H. Armacost Chair in Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution.
